Getting my glow on with my BYS highlighting palette

Hey lovelies! It’s nearly spring and I literally cannot wait for a bit of damn sunshine. I love snow, but I’m totally over it after being snowed in for three days so far this year. With spring and summer on the horizon, I thought it was time to finally buy myself a highlighter. As someone whose only begun to take her makeup seriously over the past year or so (shameful I know!), I’ve been told that it should be a staple in anyone’s collection. I have to admit, I now agree!

Using a highlighter has always terrified me! I dread the day I walk out of the house looking like a frickin’ disco ball!

I’ve never truly appreciated the need for a highlighter. As I work full time and blog full time too, my makeup routine has always been very basic and quick as I need to be out of the house ready to go. Saying that, because I’ve overhauled my morning routine and now have time to spend on myself, I’ve started to take my makeup routine more seriously.

Another TK Maxx find

If you’ve read my blog for a while now, you’ll have figured out that I’m a total sucker for TK Maxx. This place is like my favourite place to go to find cool new things. I could honestly spend hours in that shop.

Recently I’ve spent time digging through all of the makeup and beauty products they have and took a chance on buying one of the highlighter palettes I’ve found, as well as a new set of brushes. Hands down, these have to be two of the best products I’ve ever stumbled across.

The shades

The BYS Highlighter Palette offers five different shades. Glam, Glisten, Gleam, Golden and Glimmer. I’ve tried every one of them and I have to admit that I have three solid favourites. Despite that, all have such good pigmentation and apply incredibly well. Before I go into each colour I have to say, I actually quite like the packaging. It’s a cute holographic purple colour and, underneath the info card on the inside is a fab mirror which means you can apply it on the go!

Glam – Personally I quite like the glam colour. It’s a great colour for the spring season and is a subtle pink shade. I’m not sure how well it will work with my skin tone in the summer as I tan very quickly and I think this might be a bit pale, but for winter and spring, I think it works really well.

Glisten – I wasn’t a big fan of this one as for my colour of skin it’s too pink. I’ve never been one to wear a lot of pink makeup or blusher as I have olive skin and find bronzer works better for me. For a different skin tone, this would be a fab shade and it applies just as good as the others.

Gleam – Another one of my favourites, and one that I have gone too as an everyday colour. I find that this one is one of the best ones for me as it really makes my cheekbones stand out. This particular colour has a lot of potential for you to wear subtly and also to build up if you’re doing your makeup for a night out.

Golden – I absolutely LOVE this colour! Having olive skin means that warmer tones are better for me. Golden is definitely my top colour out of them all. As I use bronzer on a daily basis in my routine this one sits very well against it. The pigmentation is fab!

Glimmer – This one is probably my least favourite, purely because it’s too dark for me. If you have a fab holiday tan or darker skin I think this would work better than it did on my face. Saying that I may try it after I have been on a sunny holiday and you never know, this may end up being my top choice!

It does also come with a little brush at the end but to be completely honest, I wouldn’t use it as it’s not great. It’s very basic and doesn’t hold the powder well enough for you to be able to apply it.

Instead of sticking with the little brush that comes with the highlight palette, I decided to invest in some new brushes. (Yes it’s another TK Maxx find obvs).

Having hunted around the store I found a gorgeous set of brushes! I’m always dubious about buying new brushes as I have my go-to Bobbi Brown foundation brush and blusher brush that I always use and love. Now I’ll always continue to use these as they are beyond perfect, but investing in highlighter meant I needed a specific brush.

The set I bought comes with a blusher, highlighter and two eyeshadow brushes. They’re the most gorgeous rose gold colour with pink bristles. I’ve only used the highlighter brush so far and I’m impressed! They’re so soft and help apply the highlighter with ease. If you’re after a new set of brushes, I’d highly recommend checking out TK Maxx before you spend tonnes of money on a designer set.

I’ve been using the palette for a couple of weeks now and I’m totally converted into a highlighter wearing gal. Yes, I’ve had to teach myself not to put too much on (hell who doesn’t want to glow every day!), but it’s been fab to finally try some. It really does add another dimension to your face.

What is your go-to highlighter palette? Do you have a favourite set of brushes? Let me know in the comments 🙂

‘Till next time lovelies x
