It’s super hard to get a good night’s rest when it’s too hot to sleep—and since we’re now seeing “record high temperature” headlines in the news, it’s time to figure out our night time cool-down strategies.
I don’t know about you guys but at the moment I’m struggling so bad to sleep with this damn heat! Not that I’m complaining…I mean hell, in Yorkshire it’s so rare that we see a good amount of sunshine!
Getting a good nights sleep is so important, not only to help you function at work during the day but also for your health. It truly does help in the weight loss game if you’re getting enough sleep.
In order to sleep well in this heat, we need to create the coolest possible conditions in our bedrooms.
Your mattress
Jumping onto your mattress at the end of a long day is one of the best feelings ever, so ensuring that it’s cool and comfortable is super important, particularly when it’s warmer.
With all the new technology out there, it means that mattresses can literally be boxed up and delivered to your door in days! Plus nowadays most companies are happy to offer you a trial period, meaning you can test your mattress and return or swap it if you’re not happy…bonus! It totally beats trialling it for two awkward minutes in a showroom.
We bought ours at the start of this year from Dunelm and it’s been one of the best decisions ever! I cannot for the life of me find it online, but I’d definitely recommend looking online at their range!
Bedding bedding bedding
For me, this is definitely one of the most important elements in helping you sleep easily during the warmer weather.
Linen and cotton are both ideal fabrics for sleeping in the heat. They are woven from natural fibres that breathe remarkably well, which is key for staying cool. In the summer you should definitely opt for either of these over fabrics like silk!
Changing up your bedding is the quickest and easiest way (albeit one of the more expensive ways) to freshen up your bed (and bedroom)! Your bed is the focal point of the room, so giving it a new style can reinvigorate the whole space. I’m a big advocate of switching up your bedding with the seasons.
For new bedding, I always head to TK Maxx as I find they have a fantastic range all year round, especially for new sets. We especially like the Hotel Collection which are superb for quality and price.
In the winter you might want cosier, warmer-sleeping sheets, with a toasty wool throw on top. However, in the summer, you want something light and airy that not only keeps you cool but also brings out the mood and spirit of the season.
Not forgetting the curtains!
Let’s not forget about the long window curtains that are usually part of any bedroom’s décor. Use them to keep the hot temperatures at bay during summer but remember to open them at night so the breeze can get in. If you prefer dark-coloured curtains during winter because they make the room feel cosy, during summer you should opt for lighter colours.
For large windows or high ceilings, Yorkshire Linen’s ready-made curtains will help you finish your look off perfectly! They have a huge range of affordable and high-quality curtains for every bedroom style.
To help keep your bedroom temperature down, opt for some of their Voile Panel curtains which are not only simple and stylish but will also help keep your room cool all day.
