My tips for working out at home #1

Hi you gorgeous lot 🙂 It’s me again, harping on about fitness and all things healthy living…

When I first started taking my fitness seriously, the thought of going to the gym was daunting, to say the least! The idea of people looking at me and judging how I looked on the machines, if my form was good enough and how I looked in gym leggings, was horrible.

Before I signed up to the gym I started to do little bits at home. Yes working out at home isn’t easy in my opinion, there are so many distractions it’s unbelievable. So if you’re serious about starting your fitness journey at home, here are my top tips for starting…

My tips for working out at home

Be consistent

Figure out what schedule will work for you. Write it down on your calendar and keep it on there. For me, I prefer to workout in the morning, for example, every morning, I get up half an hour earlier and either do a quick HIIT session or some Yoga. Right now, if I workout in the evening it’s at the gym, but I still stick to my “at home” morning schedule. But, don’t worry when life gets in the way, just get something in…family walks, squats while cooking dinner, even running up and down the stairs between lunch prep. Just keep moving.

Have your own equipment that you can easily get out and put away

A few years ago I started buying my own at home gym kit. In our house we now have a set of dumbbells, some sliders and resistance bands, oh and not forgetting my Yoga mat. All of this easily fits in our cupboard under the stairs and I can easily whip them out on a morning. My Extreme Fitness Core Sliders were from Amazon and are one of the best things I’ve ever bought! They were only £5.99 and are so good for multiple core exercises. Again my Pro Works Resistance Bands were only £6.95 and from Amazon, they add a great bit of extra work to my leg exercises.

I’m really tempted to get a kettlebell too as these are great for so many different areas of the body! If you know of any good ones, let me know in the comments 🙂

Have a video or something to guide you

Whether this is a workout plan like I’m doing at the moment or a DVD, there are so many great tools to help you workout at home! I’m currently in the throes of doing the Busy Bee Summer Shape Up which is great, but you do need to have access to the gym for this one. However, there are so many different YouTuber’s who have great sessions online, one of my favourites at the moment is Whitney Simmons, she has some great targeted workouts that you can do without heading to the gym.

Have clothes and shoes that are easy to workout in and that you feel great in

For me there is nothing worse than having gym kit that I feel I look god awful in. It just demotivates me way too much. Personally, I don’t know about the ladies out there that have a larger chest, finding a good sports bra that holds you in and up is a nightmare too! The struggle is real kids…Recently I decided to take the plunge and treat myself to some Gymshark bits. I know, they’re expensive, and I have had to save to be able to afford anything, but I honestly think they’re worth it!

The material is super soft and I just find that everything fits so nicely 🙂 for me, it was worth investing in, but I know for some people Gymshark night not be the best fit! It’s completely dependent on what you like! Let me know if you’d like to see a YouTube video on some options in the comments!

Eat and drink healthily

You may have heard the saying “You can’t out train a bad diet”, well I’m afraid folks that it’s true. You can’t…I’ve tried! It is so much easier to get in a workout when you aren’t bogged down with bad food. Indigestion and heartburn make it so hard to workout. Eat lean protein, fruits and veggies and power through a workout.

Don’t forget to stay properly hydrated, too. I always have water with me when working out at home or away from home. The key is? Making sure you drink it, too! If you want to learn more about eating healthily and counting your macros to stay on track, check out my previous post.

Hopefully these tips are a great way to help get you started on your fitness journey at home! Check back later for my #2 tips post and let me know in the comments if there’s anything you’d like me to cover or questions you’d like answering 🙂
